Gwynedd WP&CA Quiz Night
Following the invitation from Gwynedd to join them for their Quiz Night, three teams from Clwyd travelled over to the Tafarn y Gors Bach at Bethel, near Caernarfon, on Friday 16th February - and what a fantastic time we all had. The Tafarn was overflowing with around 100 Welsh Pony & Cob enthusiasts all intent on having an evening of fun, laughter and friendship - even the hosts at the Tafarn couldn't resist joining in! The Quiz consisted of 100 brain stretching questions with a half-time break to enjoy a delicious Lobscows Supper. Gwynedd won the Quiz, but Clwyd gave them a good run for their money!
Thank you so much Gwynedd for your wonderful hospitality and the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Here's to the next time!!
WP&CS Performance Sire Ratings
Congratulations to Audrey & Don Weaver on topping the Lead Rein/First Ridden category of the WP&CS 2006 Performance Sire Ratings with their Section B stud stallion, Morwyn Bronze Ensign.

We Have Had An Invitation
Gwynedd WP&CA are hosting a Quiz Night on Friday 16th February 2007 at Bethel, near Caernarfon and have invited Clwyd to send teams to compete. This is sure to be a good night, so if you fancy a bit of fun and an opportunity to "natter with the neighbours" and can get together a team of four, please let our Chairman, Dilwyn Roberts, know (his contact details are on the "Committee" page) and he will book you in and provide you with more details.
Talk by Arwel Jones
"The Late David John Jones of Frongoy"
We knew we were in for a treat on Friday 26th January when Arwel Jones from Ceredigion came to give us a talk on his very longstanding friendship and association with David John Jones of Frongoy, who in 1930 founded the world famous Fronarth Stud, but it became a double treat when we found Arwel was accompanied by David John's nephew, Gwyn Jones of Fronarth.
Arwel was born in Pennant, Llanon, the next village to Frongoy Farm and from the time he first heard, at the age of 10, about David John and the ponies and cobs he kept at Frongoy, he couldn't wait to visit. When he did eventually manage to go he was completely spellbound and from then on spent practically every weekend and all his school holidays helping and working at Fronarth.
Arwel told us how David John had originally started out in life as a travelling stallion man, riding his Welsh Mountain Pony and leading the cob stallion, Pennant Mathrafal from farm to farm in the South Cardigan / North Pembroke area. Life was hard then as cobs were in decline and a stallion man had to earn enough to pay for his own food and lodgings along the way. The stallion service fee was a very modest £2, so there were plenty of days when David John had to survive on the 'paned' that was offered at the farms he visited. But he loved the life and made many friends along the way. He was the last man to walk a stallion, and Pennant Mathrafal was the last stallion to travel in such a way.
One of the ponies bred by David John was the grey, Fronarth What Ho, by Dinarth What Ho (bred by Dinarth Hall Stud in Colwyn Bay), who was standing at stud at the time with Dr Wynne Davies at Ceulan, out of the Section C mare Fronarth Queen Bee. He was Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Welsh as a 2 year old in 1954 and was a natural showman with action to burn. David John, recognising this talent, broke him to harness and together they made a fearsome combination, winning the Royal Welsh Harness Class 15 times before he was retired at the age of 26. Four years later, David John held a birthday dinner to celebrate What Ho's 30th birthday, to which 140 people came - such was the regard in which he was held. He lived to the grand old age of 32.
Arwel went on to tell us how David John had showed great foresight in bringing back to Fronarth two seventeen year old stallions, namely Mathrafal and Cahn Dafydd (sire of Brenin Dafydd), both of whom he was able to purchase for very modest amounts. Also in 1984 he was able to lease Golden Sunshine, by Pentre Rainbow, at the age of 18 years. Golden Sunshine is well known to us here in North Wales as he stood for some time with Mrs Margaret Calvert at Rowen, near Conwy. He is the sire of Fronarth Welsh Model who first won her class at the Royal Welsh in 1989, and repeated the success a further five times before winning the George Prince of Wales Cup in 1996. Fronarth Stud have now won this supreme accolade on 6 occasions. We were amazed and thrilled when Arwel reached down for the Cup, which was first awarded in 1908, to show us.
Arwel told us how proud David John was that Gwyn and Nicola will be carrying on the good work at Fronarth and that the bloodlines he laid down would continue for years to come. He was undoubtedly one of the finest horsemen that Wales has produced.
Thank you so much Arwel and Gwyn for coming to see us - you gave us an evening to remember. And if you read the next item you will see that we have a wonderful new trophy to compete for at Denbigh & Flint Show for the Supreme Welsh Champion - so how about it Gwyn? !!
Old Remedies
There was a packed house of members and friends on Friday 1st December to listen to the talk on "Old Remedies" by Ifan and Gwynfor Lloyd Jones (Sangwyn Stud) who are, in Gwynfor's own words, probably "the oldest double-act in the business" - spanning over 150 years of horse and pony experience between them.
Ifan Lloyd Jones, who was still showing and winning championships at the age of 83, is now in his 92nd year. He gave a wonderful insight into how life was in the 1920's when Shire Horses were the tractors and Ponies were the cars. He started working a team of horses on a local farm at 10 years of age and emphasised to us how much care was taken with their health and wellbeing - just as you would regularly service and maintain expensive machinery today, the horses had the very best of care and attention and there was great pride and rivalry in producing a high standard of turnout. There was no nicer feeling than to be complimented on your pony or team when visiting or delivering goods to the local shops and markets.
There are now 4 generations of the Lloyd Jones family involved with horses and ponies. Gwynfor is currently in the process of re-establishing the Hiraethog Stud of Shire Horses, to run alongside Sangwyn Stud of Welsh Ponies & Cobs, and he stressed how essential his father's great knowledge is to him with this. He currently has two mares, Caerbellan Primrose and Highbank Bonnie, which he is hoping to show this season.
Their commitment to Welsh Ponies & Cobs remains undiminished and last year saw the family present the Sangwyn Trophy (in memory of Mrs Ifan Lloyd Jones) for the Welsh Supreme Champion at Denbighshire & Flintshire County Show. So all you showing people out there - make a note in your diaries!
Thank you Ifan & Gwynfor for a most interesting and entertaining evening. You were both the best "Old Remedy" of all - A TONIC !!
Royal Welsh Winter Fair
Huge congratulations to Anna Lloyd and her daughter Julia Owen (Anri Stud) for taking the Royal Welsh Winter Fair by storm! Not only did they secure the Section B Championship with their yearling filly, Anri Mimosa, they also took the Reserve Section B Championship with their lovely filly foal, Anri Yasmin. A really tremendous achievement.

Section B Champion - Anri Mimosa Reserve Section B Champion - Anri Yasmin
Anna is a very long standing and senior member of Clwyd and has been breeding Welsh Section B's since 1963. She is still very much actively involved with the stud on a daily basis, but gives great credit to Julia for all the work she puts in with the handling, training and production of the ponies, and to Bobby whose expertise and assistance has been so valued and appreciated over the years.
But the Clwyd connection doesn't stop there! Anri Mimosa is by Griashall Kiwi who stood at stud with Kevin Walker (Brynoffa Stud) when Mimosa was conceived and Anri Yasmin is by Eyarth Tacoma, bred and owned by Jessie and Joseph Parry-Williamson (Eyarth Stud).

Horse of the Year Show
Well - what can we say?!! What a truly fantastic result for Clwyd members at HOYS. Firstly we would like to send our warmest congratulations to Tom & Gill Farrow (Waitwith Stud), long standing members and supporters of Clwyd WP&CA, and the breeders of Waitwith West Wind - Cuddy Supreme In Hand Champion of 2006. Our congratulations also to West Wind's owner and exhibitor, Debbie Barr of Firle Stud in West Sussex who is probably best known as a top producer of ridden ponies, West Wind being no exception as he has won some major awards under saddle this season, including qualifying for HOYS as a ridden pony as well!! But Debbie took on the 'In-Handers' at their own game - and beat them! A really tremendous achievement.

Welsh Pony & Cob Society EGM
All WP&CS members should have received Notice of the Extraordinary General Meeting taking place on Saturday 14th October 2006 in the Food Hall on the Royal Welsh Showground at Llanelwedd at 1.30pm. Prior to this meeting, from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, there is to be a 45 minute Presentation followed by an Open Discussion Forum on the recommendations for the Society's Governance Review. This is a very important meeting to put in motion the necessary changes to the way the Welsh Pony & Cob Society is governed.
If you are a fully paid up member of the WP&CS we do recommend you to attend.
If you have any problems with transport, please contact either our Chairman, Mr Dilwyn Roberts, our Secretary, Mrs Audrey Weaver, or any Committee Member, and they will do their best to put you in touch with other members who can assist.
Please note: You will need to take your signed 2006 Membership Card with you to gain access to the Food Hall.
Clwyd Highflyers
Just like waiting for a bus - you wait for ages and then two come along at once!! Many congratulations to two of our founder members who had strong links to selected lots in the Highflyer section of the 2006 Fayre Oaks Sale.
Firstly Carl & Linda Ridgeway (Aros Stud), breeders of Aros Zak. Carl is, as you know, Vice Chairman of Clwyd Welsh Pony & Cob Association. Aros Zak was originally sold as a yearling at Clwyd Sale and has since gone on to achieve great things under saddle as a lead rein pony, including securing the Mini Mountain & Moorland Championship at this year's Cheshire County Show.
Secondly Wyn & Nerys Jones (Nerwyn Stud) for Nerwyn Linda. On agreeing to lease Linda to Heniarth Stud, she went on to produce the beautiful filly Heniarth L'l Peach, by Roseisle Pandy Tudyr for Richard & Meirion. Nerwyn Linda is a daughter of Wyn & Nerys's foundation mare Coed Coch Lili. Linda has now returned to the Nerwyn Stud where she is a much loved member of the family. A full brother to L'l Peach, Nerwyn Gŵyl y Banc, was exported to South Africa earlier this year.
Good luck to the purchasers of these two lovely ponies.
B.D.S. National Championships
Burghley
Congratulations to Medina Dicks, Dilwyn Lloyd and Hannah Williams on qualifying and competing their Section A gelding Tyn Derw Blue Boy for the second year running for the British Driving Society's National Championships at Burghley.
Medina (in the box seat) with 13 year old son Kenneth as groom competed in the Open Welsh Section A, B & C class, finishing 7th overall - a tremendous achievement against some of the very best turnouts in the country. Hannah then took over the reins to contest the Open Junior Whip Championship, finishing 5th overall (and highest placed Welsh) in a class of 15 young drivers from all over the UK.
Medina purchased Tyn Derw Blue Boy at 15 months of age and, with Dilwyn, is responsible for all his training and development.
Driving is one of the fastest growing horse sports in the country and Medina and her team are a great example of how the Welsh Section A's versatility can provide great fun for adults, as well as children.
